Finnish, the national language of
Finland, is mainly in Finland
but also by people of Finnish origin in Sweden
and other countries, belongs to the Fenno-Ugric group
of languages, which is a part of the Uralian
family of languages. Other Uralian languages are Estonian,
which is rather
near to Finnish, and Hungarian,
which is very different from Finnish, and several languages spoken in Russia,
mostly by small ethnic groups.
There are about 4,700,00 mother tongue
speakers in Finland, 300,000 in Sweden, 12,000 in Norway, 5,000 in Estonia,
200,000 in the USA & 36,000 in Canada.
