Greek
Greek is the national
language of the people of Greece, embracing the early, Attic, Hellenistic,
Byzantine, and modern periods.
It is
spoken by the 10 million inhabitants of Greece and some 82% of the population of
Cyprus, numbering a further half million. It is also spoken around the world in
the diaspora of Greeks who have emigrated for political or, far more commonly,
economic reasons.
Greek does not have a large number of
mother tongue speakers, but is spoken in the following countries; Greece,
Cyprus, Germany, Poland, Italy, Albania, Sweden, Turkey, Armenia, Australia,
Egypt, USA, Canada, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Paraguay, Ukraine, Russia, South
Africa, Austria, Malawi, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, Congo, Bulgaria, United
Kingdom, Bahamas, France, Jordan, Romania & Tunisia.
