Lithuanian
Lithuanian is the language spoken by most of the inhabitants of
Lithuania
and by expatriates in other countries. Lithuanian is a Baltic
language. It appears in two main dialect groups, Low Lithuanian and High
Lithuanian. Modern Standard Lithuanian (based on the West High Lithuanian
dialect) developed fully just before the first period of Lithuanian political
independence (1918-1940), when it became the country's official language.
4,000,000 speakers, with 75% being in Lithuania. Concentrations of
speakers may be found in; United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Brazil,
Argentina, Uruguay, Russia, Poland, Estonia, Belarus, Kazakjstan, Uzbekistan and
Latvia.
