Portuguese
Portuguese is derived from Latin.  It spread along the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula with the Roman invasion of 218 BC.  It was brought across the Atlantic and to Africa by Portuguese colonizers.

Portuguese is spoken in seven countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé spread over five continents, and territories of Macao and East-Timor, as well as in the African, Portuguese and Brazilian communities living throughout the World.

The Portuguese language is one of the most-widely spoken languages in the world and it is estimated that by the year 2000 it will be spoken by 200 million people.
